Issue #5
Philadelphia mini guide, a Gladiator experience at the Colosseum, and Viceroy's rebranding.
Welcome to Next Vacay issue #5! This week we’re serving up some brotherly love Philly style, plus new travel experiences that are giving major main character energy.
Mini Guide: Philadelphia, USA
Perfect for: History buffs, foodies, and art lovers
Philadelphia’s rich history paired with its vibrant arts and culinary scene makes it a great destination for everyone. And I’m not just saying that because I grew up there. From iconic landmarks like Independence Hall to its buzzing food markets and sports arenas (with the greatest fans ever), this city caters to travelers of all interests and ages.
It’s a perfect weekend getaway trip, with enough to do that will keep you coming back to explore this fun and friendly city.
Best Time to Visit: April through October, or for the holidays
Spring and fall offer mild weather, perfect for walking tours, parks, and outdoor exploration. These seasons also bring fewer crowds, making it easier to enjoy the city’s attractions.
Summer has a lively energy with festivals and a lot of outdoor activities to enjoy, but it can get humid.
December is magical with holiday markets and lights, while January and February are best avoided unless you don’t mind braving the cold for cheaper rates.
Budget Meter: $$ = budget-friendly with a few splurges
Philadelphia is more affordable than other major U.S. cities nearby like New York. You’ll find a range of options from casual eateries and mid-range hotels to splurge-worthy experiences like fine dining or boutique accommodations. But you definitely don’t need to go all out in this city to enjoy it to the fullest.
Many top attractions, including the Liberty Bell and some museums, are free or low-cost, making it easy to experience the city on a more modest budget.
Sustainability Meter: Progressing Green
Philadelphia has been making strides in sustainability with bike-sharing programs like Indego, a growing number of LEED-certified buildings, and green initiatives in its parks.
The city’s public transit system (SEPTA) is affordable and accessible, but like many older systems, it’s still working toward modernization and lower emissions.
Getting There:
Very accessible - Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is a well-connected hub with direct flights from many U.S. cities and international destinations. It’s about a 20-minute drive from PHL into downtown (depending on traffic). Ride-shares, taxis, and regional rail are all convenient options as well.
PHL Tips: The airport is manageable in size, with local options like Chickie’s & Pete’s for a quick bite. If you have a longer layover, Philly Pretzel Factory pretzels are a must-try.
Be mindful of timing: This airport has been known to have long TSA lines during peak hours, so arrive early, especially if you’re traveling on a holiday weekend.
Better yet, if you’re on the East Coast, Amtrak’s 30th Street Station makes getting to Philly by train a breeze.
If this sounds like your next vacay, we’ll have all the details and recommendations next weekend in the Full Guide to Philadelphia.
Making Headlines:
Airbnb Is Renting Out the Colosseum for Up to 16 Lucky Guests to Live Out Their ‘Gladiator’ Fantasies (Variety): When in Rome… do as Russell Crowe does. Timed to coincide with the release of Gladiator 2, the experience promises gladiator-inspired activities for free, though you won’t actually be able to stay the night there. This is part of Airbnb’s latest efforts to wow travelers with bucket-list-worthy stays and experiences.
Belmond unveils the Britannic Explorer luxury sleeper train (Business Traveller): This high-end journey offers a nostalgic yet opulent way to explore the British countryside, with lavishly appointed cabins, gourmet dining, and curated experiences at stops along the way. Think Downton Abbey meets modern luxury, all while cutting down on carbon footprints by swapping flights for scenic rail travel.
Lisbon residents call for vote on restricting vacation rentals (CNN): In a move that signals the growing tensions between locals and the tourism industry, Lisbon residents are pushing for a referendum to limit short-term vacation rentals like those listed on Airbnb. Lisbon’s struggle is similar to that of other European cities like Barcelona and Venice, as they grapple with balancing tourism benefits with preserving local communities.
Viceroy Bets on Experiences in Overhaul of Luxury Hotel Brand (Skift): The Viceroy hotel group is reimagining its approach to luxury with a focus on curated, experience-driven stays. Moving beyond just opulent rooms and high-end amenities, the brand aims to immerse guests in local culture and bespoke adventures. This shift comes as luxury travelers increasingly prioritize unique, memory-making trips over traditional notions of indulgence, signaling a broader trend in the hospitality industry.
